いっぱんろん【一般論】

a general [common sense] argument; a common [an ordinary] view 《of…》; a generalization; a generality; generalities.

●その議論は一般論に終始した. The argument was confined to generalities.

・それは一般論にすぎない. That's nothing more than a generalization.

●彼は一般論を述べるにとどまった. He confined himself to reciting generalities.

●これはあくまでも一般論であって, この原則があてはまらない場合もあります. What is offered here is at best a general view; there are some cases where these principles do not apply.

・単なる一般論ではなくて, 君自身の意見を聞きたい. What I want to hear is not the commonly accepted view but your own ideas.

・私は特定のだれかをさして言ったわけではなく, 一般論として申し上げただけです. I didn't specify an individual in particular; I was merely speaking in generalities.

・一般論として, 合併は業務内容の拡大だけでなく人員削減の要素を併せ持つ. According to the accepted wisdom, the key factors in a merger include not only business expansion but payroll reduction as well.
